coffee
Coffee has an interesting effect on me; when I drink it, it doesn't seem to affect how tired I am. But when I drink it in large quantities, it makes me tired. Because of this, I've never been much of a coffee drinker, but I do enjoy it.
When I drink regular coffee, I drink it black, or "unadulterated." I don't care for flavored beans very much, but I have them from time to time, since I'm eager to try new things. I also like mocha-like drinks from time to time.
Last fall, I had a little forray into the world of coffee roasting. I think I'd come accross a webpage or two about it before, but never really looked into it, but finally decided that I would like to see what it was all about. I did a fair amount of research on the web and came across a good page for home roasting (Sweet Maria's). I found out from the page that certain types of popcorn poppers work well for home roasting coffee beans. I found one of the poppers they were referring to when I was out shopping at thrift stores, and also found some green beans at a local grocery store, and so went home to find out more about coffee. My main purpose in roasting my own coffee was to find out what different levels of roasting tasted like, especially since most roasts out there are dark. My first goal was to get a light roast, so that I could find out what the plant tasted like by itself, and not carbonized. I turned out great, and I found out that I do like lighter roasts, as well as some a bit darker. But there's nothing like freshly roasted coffee. Nothing else comes close to it.
